Special Events

During the week of January 24-February 1, 2009,  Dr. Ginsberg traveled to El Salvador in the area of Usulutan, near the lower Rio Lempa river region, to participate in a mission which provided eye and medical care to thousands of indigent people. This was Dr. Ginsberg's eleventh trip to Central America. The NEVOSH group was considerably smaller than past years. Approximately 45 volunteers made the trek to Central America.  The group stayed in a guesthouse in Nueva Esperanza, a self-sustained farming community, about 15 minutes from our clinic site.  The volunteers, who came from throughout the United States, consisted of optometrists, opticians, internists, audiologists, nurses and many others.  Almost 3000 people were provided with eye examinations, medical and audiological exams, many for the first time in their life. Many eye diseases were treated, and over 1100 eyeglasses were dispensed from our library of 12,000 pairs. It was a demanding yet rewarding experience for all people who participated, and one that will bring many who went, back to El Salvador again for years to come.
